A survey of nearly 200 business and finance professionals at small and midsize companies finds fragmented data, constant output checks, and new governance work are severely limiting what AI delivers for the business
COLUMBIA, Md., Nov. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Accounting Seed, the AI-native accounting platform built on Salesforce, released its latest research report, The Hidden Workload Behind AI Productivity in Finance. The survey found that 82% of finance team members at U.S. small and midsize companies would get more value from AI if their financial data were in one system.
Many businesses are expecting a leap in productivity from AI layered on top of financial systems that don't share data and lack the business context behind it. When the data underneath is scattered and stripped of meaning, AI inherits every gap, and finance teams are left to sort it out.
Scattered data and missing context leave finance teams cleaning up after AI
AI is helping finance teams work faster, but it has also shifted new work onto them. When financial data is spread across disconnected tools, someone still has to pull the information together, decide which numbers to trust, and check AI's output before it can be used. Without access to a company's financial data, policies, and accounting practices, AI also lacks the context needed to provide insights that support strategic business decisions.
Key survey findings
- New work absorbs time savings: 81% say AI has saved them meaningful time, but 70% say it has also handed them new responsibilities without taking any existing ones away, so the time saved often goes to new work.
- Outputs still need checking: 54% often have to correct AI-generated outputs before they can use them, and 48% are concerned AI is pulling from the wrong data sources.
- Data cleanup eats into productivity: 45% spend time cleaning up data just to make AI tools usable.
- Security adds a governance layer: 66% say financial data security concerns have created additional governance and policy work around AI, rising to 74% among finance leaders.
- Executives see more upside than their teams: 77% of executives say AI has freed up time for higher-value work, compared with 61% of finance team members. And 46% of finance team members say AI has not delivered the productivity gains they expected, compared with 28% of executives.
"When your financial data lives in six places, your AI has six places to be wrong," said Nasser Chanda, CEO of Accounting Seed. "You can give AI the skills of the smartest analyst in the world, but if it's working from scattered spreadsheets and three versions of the truth, someone still has to figure out which numbers to trust. That's the hidden workload. The next wave of productivity will come from AI that works from a single source of truth, understands how your business operates, and can deliver trustworthy strategic insights as a result."
Reducing the friction around AI in finance
Nearly all executives surveyed (98%) say they use AI in finance to increase their team's output, not reduce its size. But when employees spend their saved time preparing data, correcting results, and managing new governance requirements, that capacity never reaches the business.
Reducing that friction starts with the system underneath AI. When financial and operational data live in one system under one set of access controls, AI works from a single version of the truth, and teams spend less time cleaning up behind it.
"When accounting and operational data share one platform, AI can work with information across the business and understand the context behind it without teams having to piece it together first," said Ryan Sieve, CTO of Accounting Seed. "And when that access is governed by existing permissions and trust boundaries, companies can expand what AI does without creating a separate set of controls for every new tool."
The full report, The Hidden Workload Behind AI Productivity in Finance, includes findings across executives, finance leaders, finance team members, and Operations & IT professionals, showing where AI is delivering value, where it's creating new work, and why adding more AI tools won't fix a company's underlying data issues.
